Frequently Asked

SHIP Sexual Health — your questions answered

Will my visit be on my Medicare statement?

Sexual health visits are bulk-billed, but the consultation reason is not listed on your statement. Your privacy is fully protected.

Can I be tested if I have no symptoms?

Yes — routine STI screening for asymptomatic patients is encouraged. Many STIs (especially Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea) have no symptoms and only blood/urine/swab testing finds them.

Do I need an appointment for STI testing?

No appointment needed during clinic hours — walk-in welcome. For PrEP/PEP/contraception, please book a longer slot.

How does PEP work?

PEP is a 28-day course of HIV antiretrovirals taken after possible exposure (sex without condom, needle stick). Must be started within 72 hours — sooner is better. Walk in or call us urgently.

Is gender-affirming hormone therapy available here?

Yes — Daniel Sankar provides hormone therapy under the informed consent model. We work with patients of all gender identities respectfully.

Do you accept patients of all sexualities and genders?

Absolutely. Our SHIP clinic is explicitly LGBTQIA+ affirming, judgement-free and welcoming to everyone — regardless of who you are or who you love.

What does SHIP mean and what does the partnership with MSHC involve?

SHIP stands for Sexual Health In Practice. It's a national training program that equips GPs and nurses with advanced clinical skills in sexual healthcare. Our SHIP accreditation means our team has been trained directly by Melbourne Sexual Health Centre (MSHC) — Victoria's leading sexual health clinic, part of Alfred Health. The partnership is a Victorian government initiative to expand high-quality sexual healthcare into local communities.
